Titanium was discovered in Cornwall, where Hardmetal Engineering based, by William Gregor in 1791, it was named after the Greek Titans by Martin Heinrich Klaproth. It is the 9th most common element in the Earth crust.

Pure titanium is a silvery-white, glossy, hard, light metal. Two of titanium most useful properties are high corrosion resistance and the highest strength-to-weight ratio of any metal. Unalloyed titanium is as strong as some steels, but 45% lighter. It is ductile and becomes malleable when heated. It is insoluble in water, but soluble in concentrated acids.


Titanium is used in metallic alloys as a substitute for aluminium because of its strength and lightweight, along with its heat and corrosion resistance. Titanium metal is used as an alloying agent with metals including aluminium, iron and molybdenum. Alloys of titanium are mainly used in aerospace, aircraft and engines where strong, lightweight, temperature-resistant materials are needed. Its resistance to sea water means it is used for hulls of ships, propeller shafts and other structures exposed to the sea.

Titanium bio-compatible and is used for a variety of surgical applications such as the ball-and-socket hip joints.
